Case studies from Chase Park Neuro Centre

Real life examples clients achievements

Case Study 1

At Chase Park Neuro Centre we use a range of outcome measures to help track an individual’s progress with their rehabilitation program. Below we have shown how one client has progressed during a rehabilitation placement at Chase Park Rehabilitation Suite, using the Care Dependency Scale – Rehabilitation (CDS – R). Sarah (whose name has been changed to maintain her confidentiality) is a young lady who has made significant progress in a range of areas over a period of 6 months.

Care Dependency Scale (CDS – R)

The CDS-R is a new addition to the Chase Park Rehabilitation suite’s ‘Basket’ of outcomes measures). The scale has its origins in Virginia Henderson’s nursing model of the essence of care and measures independence (defined in this context as ‘the ability of the client to themselves within the context of an activity – including any mechanical, electronic or technological aid, but excluding human intervention’).

While some of the outcome measures we use at Chase Park Rehabilitation Suite can give a broad view of client improvements, the CDR-R helps us to explore dependency more thoroughly, providing a credible and practical method of assessment. *The measure has shown high levels of internal consistency and equivalence in research. The CDS-R assesses 16 domains (see box opposite) and the results can be shown graphically as below.

We are currently using the CDS-R with our active rehabilitation clients, with a view to expanding its use to our other client groups.

Sarah's Outcomes

  • Increased ability to weight bear and transfer independently from one surface to another
  • Increased ability to take more of an active role in morning routines that were previously very difficult
  • Improved speech processing and output
  • More alert due to expert management of medication regime
  • Motivated for new challenges such as accessing the hydrotherapy pool
  • Day and night pattern has improved so she is more able to participate in therapy and now sleeps well
  • No problems with pressure areas
  • Social interaction and understanding of own behaviour has improved, minimising distress

Estimated Savings

Due to the complexity of her condition it is likely that Sarah will require long term support to live in her own home. However, the gains that she has made at Chase Park Neuro Centre have meant that she can now be effectively supported by one person with ‘sleep in’ provision at night.

Using the Northwick Park Dependency Scale/Care Needs Assessment (NPDS/NPCNA) we have estimated that the cost of providing care at home prior to August 2011 would have been £2722.00 per week. In contrast we would now estimate that the cost of her support (based on the national average home care rate) would now be around:

£1600.32

Home Care Option: Saving Afforded by rehabilitation:

£4857.66 per month

£58,292.00 per year

**£3,089,476.00 lifetime
