In 2014, as part of their Innovation Pathway, the Academic Health Science Network for the North East and North Cumbria (AHSN NENC) commissioned the York Health Economics Consortium (YHEC) to conduct a health economics review to assess the costs and benefits of Keiro’s integrated service model in the North East region, and to assess the impact that the service could have if introduced in other parts of the country. The subsequent YHEC report ‘Identifying the Economic Value of the Keiro Service’ highlights the considerable economic and health benefits of the model.

As well as validating Keiro’s service model, meeting the strategic direction of the NHS Five Year ‘Forward View’ and other key strategic drivers, the YHEC report identifies substantial financial savings: from £125-£156 million pounds over a 10 year time horizon.

The report shows that the Keiro service model improves the patient's outcomes and their overall experience, whilst generating a significant reduction in the total life-long cost to health & social care commissioners and the NHS. Crucially, this cost reduction is applicable beyond the neuro-rehabilitation patient cohort to a range of other patient groups with complex and varied rehabilitation needs.

Along with the report, YHEC has developed a comprehensive financial model to underpin the report’s findings. This financial model has been formulated to calculate the savings afforded by the Keiro service model when compared with a traditional care pathway; it can be customised and adapted by commissioners to take into account variations in patient cohorts and other local and financial variations, such as patient tariff’s and length of stay. If you would like to find out more about using the financial model please contact Boda Gallon, Chef Executive at Boda@keirogroup.co.uk.

The Final report is available here: Identifying the Economic Value of the Keiro Service

An innovative partnership between the NHS and Keiro is improving care and outcomes for patients in the North East.

Staff at Walkergate Park, a specialist NHS neurological rehabilitation service which is part of Northumberland, Tyne and Wear NHS Foundation Trust (NTW) and Keiro are now working in partnership providing specialist care for people with neurological conditions such as brain injuries or those recovering from a stroke.

NHS staff have spent the last year training colleagues at Keiro’s Chase Park Neuro Centre in Whickham providing specialists from Walkergate Park Hospital, including medical teams, physiotherapists, occupational therapists and speech therapists, so that patients can progress from WGP Hospital to Chase Park to help aid their recovery and speed up discharge.

Chief Executive at Keiro, Boda Gallon said: “Patients with neurological conditions such as those with acquired brain injury have complex care and support needs, so having the same co-ordinated team to oversee their rehabilitation and care really supports the progress they are able to make and offer confidence to them and their families.”

To find out more about this nnovative partnership please see our press coverage in Care Industry News and Love Middlesbrough.

Leading national law firm, Irwin Mitchell is expanding its reach in the North East as it opens a new consulting office at The Gateway to help support its growing client base in the Teesside region.

Boda Gallon, Keiro Chief Executive, said: “People with disabilities and their families often need legal advice and somewhere to turn to for help. With Irwin Mitchell’s commitment to assisting people with rehabilitation and care, it makes perfect sense to launch a consulting office with legal advice alongside the wide choice of services and information already provided at The Gateway’s Hub from the 3rd Sector, NHS and Social Enterprise.”

The new consulting office will complement the Gateway’s specialist services including: specialist nursing care, rehabilitation, a wellbeing & information hub and access to transitional housing to help people who have suffered strokes, serious spinal and brain injuries and other complex needs to achieve independence.

Irwin Mitchell is the current holder of the Rehabilitation First Solicitor of the Year award for its commitment to helping victims of serious injury to make progress in their lives; an award it has won in five of the past seven years.
